Biomedical NMR

PRESENTATION

Biomedical aplications of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) have undergone spectacular development in recent years. It is now posible to conveniently study a wide variety of morphological, functional and biochemical aspects in a non-invasive and non-destructive manner in cell cultures, animal models and also in humans.

However, the large scale of the equipment required to carry out the experiments and the increasing sophistication of the approaches needed have made it difficult until now for non-specialised laboratories to take advantage of the benefits that this technologhy can offer.

To promote access to preclinical imaging techniques for interested laboratories, the Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Sebastián Cerdán Facility (RMN Bio) of the CSIC/UAM has been created. The facilityprovides scientific advice thanks to the scientific director Pilar López Larrubia (CSIC) and technological support provided by Teresa Navarro Hernanz (CSIC), head of technical staff.

Currently, the following studies can be performed at the Bio NMR facility:

1.  Acquisition by high field magnetic resonance (7T) images and spectra using Bruker Biospec 70/16 7T equipment, or high field and clinical-field (3T) using MR Solutions MRI/PET equipment:

  • T1, T2, and Proton density Weighting imaging.Magnetization transfer contrast imaging.
  • Diffusion and perfusión weighted functional imaging.
  • Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging.
  • 1H, 13C and 31P localized spectroscopy in vivo.

2. PET image acquisition using MR Solution MRI/PET equipment

3. High resolution spectra acquisition using Bruker Avance Neo 11.7T equipment with TXI, TXO, BBI and HR MAS probes, the latter allowing the study of ex vivo simples from biological samples.

4. Processing of images and NMR spectra

The facility Works with UNE-EN-ISO 9001:2015 quality management system certified by AENOR with registration number ES-1326/2009.

LOCATION

The Biomedical NMR Sebastián Cerdán Facility is located on floor -1 (basement) of Building II, at the CSIC-UAM “Sols-Morreale” Biomedical Research Institute. This centre is located within the grounds of the Faculty of Medicine of the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM). Its main entrance is on Arturo Duperier Street, 4, or Arzobispo Morcillo Street, 2, and Pedro Rico Street, 2,
