Age-related hearing loss and cognitive decline

The Neurobiology of Hearing and Myelinopathies group at the Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas Sols-Morreale (IIBM), CSIC-UAM has published a review in Auditiothe scientific journal of the Spanish Association of Audiology (AEDA). In this work, available in open access and in Spanish, it is explained in a clear and accessible way what presbycusis is, is, that is, the hearing loss associated with aging, what its main mechanisms are, and which lines of research are currently being developed for its diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment.

Presbycusis affects approximately one third of the population over 65 years of age and, from the age of 80, its prevalence reaches almost 100%. Given the progressive ageing of the population and the close relationship between hearing loss, cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative diseases in the elderly, it is a priority to delve into the common mechanisms at the molecular and cellular level, to promote the development of imaging techniques and biomarkers for early diagnosis, and to develop new therapeutic strategies aimed at preventing, or delay the onset of this pathology.

Isabel Varela-Nieto, Pilar López Larrubia and Silvia Murillo Cuesta from IIBM, as well as Blanca Cervantes from the University of Anáhuac in Mexico, have contributed to this review.
