The social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum is an excellent model system to identify and characterize new conserved genes and their putative impact in human disease. We use this system, complemented with the use of mammalian cell culture, to investigate mitochondrial dysfunction and autophagy, two essential aspects with great importance in pathology and aging
