Entrevista de “El País” a Varela-Nieto sobre ruido y sordera

Varela-Nieto interviewed in "El País" on noise and deafness

El País (Health section) published on September 8 an article about the consequences of excessive noise exposure, especially among young people. Professor Varela-Nieto, group leader of the U761 of CIBERER, pointed out that, according to World Health Organization, approximately 50% of young people between 12 and 35 are at risk of hearing loss due to their listening habits with headphones. Excessive noise damages the sensory cells of the ear, which lack regeneration capacity and therefore they are irreversibly lost. Dr. Luis Lassaletta, head of Otolaryngology Service at La Paz Hospital and an associated researcher in the U761 unit, confirmed the increase in the number of patients with hearing loss secondary to noise exposure, and urged young people to protect their ear and go to the specialist when first symptoms appear.
