Olanzapine controls energy balance and body weight by modulation of hypothalamic signals

Researchers from the Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas Alberto Sols (IIBM) CSIC-UAM and CIBERdem, led by Dr. Ángela Martínez-Valverde, have shown that olanzapine, an antipsychotic drug widely used in clinical practice, regulates body weight and energy balance in male mice. The results of this study, published in the journal Metabolism, could be relevant in clinical practice to attenuate the adverse side-effects associated with chronic treatment with this second generation antipsychotic drug. Second-generation antipsychotic drugs are the mainstay choice for the treatment of schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders. However, numerous studies have shown a variety of metabolic side-effects such as obesity, insulin resistance as well as dysfunctions on glucose and lipid metabolism. These alterations from the beginning...

Dr. Isabel Varela-Nieto receives the Honor Plaque from the Spanish Association of Scientists

Prof. Isabel Varela-Nieto , group leader of the Neuropathology of Hearing and Myelinopathies research group at the Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas, Alberto Sols, IIBM (CSIC-UAM), has been awarded with the " Honor plaque " of the Spanish Association of Scientists (AEC), a distinction that this association delivers annually to scientists, entities and companies for their contributions to the development of knowledge in various fields. Professor Varela-Nieto receives this award for her scientific contributions to the characterization of the embryonic development of the inner ear and to the bases of sensorineural syndromic hearing loss, which have provided potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets, as well as for her management activities, in particular in the Spanish Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SEBBM). The...

The FERO Foundation awards Dr. Alicia González Martín with the XXXIII Beca FERO

The FERO Foundation has awarded the prestigious Beca FERO to the researcher Alicia González Martín of the Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas Alberto Sols, IIBM (CSIC-UAM) in its XXIII Edition on the basis of her scientific career and the quality of the project presented The project deserving the Beca FERO aims to explore the potential use of microRNAs (miRNAs) as new targets to enhance cancer immunotherapies The award was presented on Monday, November 14, in Madrid, during a gala presided over by the president of the Foundation, Sol Daurella, which included a charity dinner attended by 400 people. The FERO Foundation has awarded the prestigious Beca FERO, sponsored by ANDBANK, to researcher Alicia González-Martín in its XXIII Edition based on her scientific career and quality of the proposed research project. Personalized medicine thanks to an avatar mouse

Researchers from the Thyroid Hormones and Central Nervous System group at the Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas Alberto Sols, IIBM (CSIC-UAM) have just published the generation of a mouse model with a point mutation in the MCT8 protein. MCT8 protein is a specific transporter for thyroid hormones at the brain barriers and cell membranes. Mutations in the gene that encodes MCT8 lead to severe neurological alterations in the Allan-Herndon-Dudley syndrome. This research group, led by Dr. Ana Guadaño-Ferraz at the IIBM just published an article describing the introduction of a mutation in the SLC16A2 gene that codifies for MCT8, a thyroid hormones transporter whose deficiency leads to a rare disease called Allan-Herndon-Dudley syndrome, that leads to severe neurological alterations. This research has been made in...

New therapy for HER2-aggressive breast tumors

Prof. Gema Moreno-Bueno of the IIBM (UAM-CSIC) publishes a relevant study in the Journal of Experimental & Clinical Cancer Research that represents a significant advance in the treatment of HER2 breast cancer tumors This work, a multi-institutional collaborative effort, has led to the discovery of a new therapy for HER2 breast tumors that also overexpress the Gasdermin-B protein, associated with poor prognosis and resistance to anti-HER2 therapies The group of Dr. Gema Moreno-Bueno , Professor of the Biochemistry Department of the Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas Alberto Sols (CSIC-UAM), also a researcher of the MD Anderson Foundation and CIBERONC, and in collaboration with the laboratories of Dr. David Llobet, IDIBELL, Dr. Ruth Rodríguez, from the University of Barcelona, Dr. Laura Sánchez, from the University of...

The IIBM participates in the European Researchers' Night in Madrid.

The CSIC centers on the campus of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) have organized two events for the European Researchers' Night: on September 23 at the Casa Encendida and 30 at the CSIC . Both venues will host workshops, conferences, meetings with scientists and a treasure hunt, both for schools in the morning and for the general public and families in the afternoon. The Researchers' Night is a European celebration in which science is made available to the public with various scientific and cultural activities. One more year, the CSIC centers of the Cantoblanco campus (UAM) join together to participate as a whole in this initiative. This year 2022 there will be two different spaces that will bring together all the proposals designed by the scientific community of these CSIC centers: La Ciencia Encendida at...

Angela García-Mato is awarded with the Spoendlin Junior Award

Angela García-Mato, PhD student of the Neuropathology of Hearing and Myelinopathies Group has received the Spoendlin Junior Award for one of the best papers presented at the Inner Ear Biology Workshop. The 57th Inner Ear Biology Workshop (IEB 2022) was held in Trieste from September 10 to 13. This year it was held again in a face-to-face format after two editions of break due to COVID-19. This congress brought together professionals from various fields related to hearing, in order to present their latest results and enjoy workshops in an environment where the high interaction of the scientific community stood out . The PhD student Ángela García-Mato , from the group of Neuropathology of Hearing and Myelinopathies, of the Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas Alberto Sols (IIBM), CSIC-UAM, led by Professor Isabel...

Potential new therapy for anaplastic thyroid carcinoma

Scientists from the Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas Alberto Sols (IIBM), CSIC-UAM, in collaboration with scientists from IBBTEC (CSIC-UC), have analyzed the antitumor effects of an ERK dimerization inhibitor for the treatment of anaplastic thyroid carcinomas. The results, published in Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences, highlight the differential response of tumors with different oncogenic burden to targeted therapies. In general, thyroid cancer has a very good prognosis, due to the efficacy of standard treatment, which consists of surgical removal of the gland and subsequent treatment with radioactive iodine. Unfortunately, a number of these carcinomas progress to very aggressive forms, which lose their differentiated state. Among these are anaplastic thyroid carcinomas, one of the most lethal human cancers, which currently...
