The Professor Durantez award from the LAIR foundation awarded to Gema Perez Chacon Doctors Juan Manuel Domínguez (Pharma Mar) and Gema Pérez-Chacón (IIBM, CSIC-UAM) have been awarded the Professor Durántez Award from the L.A.I.R. Foundation to the best scientific publication on tumor immunology in 2020 for his work entitled: "CD13 as a new tumor target for antibody-drug conjugates: validation with the conjugate MI130110" (J Hematol Oncol. 2020, 13 (1): 32). This work was carried out in PharmaMar and in the laboratory of Dr. Juan Manuel Zapata (IIBM, CSIC-UAM) also had the collaboration of groups from the Instituto de Investigacion Sanitaria Hospital de la Princesa (IIS-IP) and the CNIC. This work identifies CD13 as a new tumor target for rare and hematological cancers and develops a new antibody-drug complex (ADC) directed against this target. ...

Antitumor compounds acting on cancer stem cells

Development of new antitumor compounds acting on cancer stem cells, with the support of the "la Caixa" Foundation. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are a subpopulation of tumor cells primarily responsible for tumor initiation, metastasis and therapy resistance. Many chemotherapies used to fight cancer fail to eliminate CSCs in part because of their high plasticity, a property used by CSCs to adapt, resist treatment and continue to spread. However, CSCs depend on mitochondrial respiration to survive and evade the immune system's defenses, which the investigators believe represents a metabolic Achilles' heel of these cells. The group led by Prof. José Luis Mascareñas at the Centro Singular de Investigación en Química Biolóxica e Materiais Moleculares (CiQUS) has been working together with the team led by Dr. Bruno Sainz at the Instituto de...

Farewell to Prof. Miguel Quintanilla

Farewell to Prof. Miguel Quintanilla on the occasion of his retirement On November 27th, on the occasion of his retirement, Professor Miguel Quintanilla gave a lecture entitled "lessons learned from the model of chemical carcinogenesis in mouse skin" in the auditorium of the Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas "Alberto Sols". Professor Quintanilla joined the former Institute of Enzymology of the CSIC to do his doctoral thesis at the end of the 1970' s, and after a productive postdoctoral stay at the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research in Glasgow, he joined the Instituto de Investigaciones Biomédicas of the CSIC in 1987 after obtaining a position as a tenured scientist. Miguel was one of the young scientists who introduced in Spain the novel techniques of Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering, and was part of the generation that launched the...

Nitrones

Nitrones, a new family of molecules with great potential for the treatment of hearing loss The Neurobiology of Hearing group of the Alberto Sols CSIC-UAM Biomedical Research Institute & unit 761 of the Rare Diseases Network Biomedical Research Center (CIBERER), led by Prof. Isabel Varela Nieto, and the Medical Chemistry Laboratory of the CSIC Institute of General Organic Chemistry, led by Prof. José Luis Marco Contelles, has just published a collaborative work in which the properties of nitrones are reviewed, highlighting their enormous potential for treating hearing loss.   Nitrones are a family of small molecules with a strong free-radicals trapping activity  and a high capacity to reduce oxidative stress, which have shown a powerful neuroprotective effect in mouse and rat models of cerebral ischemia. Oxidative stress is also...
